Mostly Water

Like the human body, and the earth's surface, this newsletter is mostly, but not entirely, water.

What I write about

I’m particularly interested in the intersection of water and culture. Although the examples may be local, the issues are global.

Whether the topic is the effect of climate change on sea level rise, storms and flooding; “Forever Chemicals” in our groundwater and drinking water; land use; animal agriculture; community; travel; memoir; or just the view out of my window, water runs through most of what I write about.

What you get

I try to write about once a week, sometimes more, sometimes less. Each post takes ten to twenty hours to research and write. A paid subscription allows me to continue doing this work.

What others are saying about Mostly Water

John,

I wanted to take a moment to thank you for attending the recent Climate Workshops, especially the water-focused session. I truly appreciate your engagement and perspective.

I was disappointed the discussion often returned to academic exercises focused on data collection and modeling. While I recognize the importance of understanding our groundwater systems, I believe we need to prioritize immediate, actionable solutions that address the pressing issues at hand. Your willingness to speak out about the critical challenges including aging water infrastructure, complicated funding opportunities, and the lack of support for small water systems was invaluable. As we confront the impacts of sea level rise, increased storm intensity, and other climate change effects, the need to address these issues will only become more urgent.

Thank you for being a strong advocate for water systems in Island County. I hope you will continue to lead the charge for practical solutions that truly benefit our communities.

Thanks,
