Love that inclusion of Amelia at the end. Such a haunting, beautiful song.

Yes. I hear in my head all the time in the desert.

"Where some have found their paradise

Others just come to harm"

Decidedly a twofer. First your essay today for Part Three of “chasing triathletes and water...” offering keen insights on today’s bifurcated versions of living. Haves/have nots. Us/them. Of course with “we” absent from how we envision solutions.

The other half of twofer? My brain and heart quickly conjured Joni when I read “... six jet planes.” One delight of human memory is the tenaciousness of fond ones. The fit with your essay could hardly be more perfect.

John, epic reporting!

Thank you for putting into words the way we unsee people. It's no wonder that we don't give voice to trees or rivers. Maybe if we thought about how we treat/see other people, we could begin to respect the natural world.🌱

I liked The City and The City. So many different ways of thinking about what he was talking about, like doublethink in the Soviet Bloc, but class, gentrification, and feudalism are right up there.
